Your hair deserves some TLC all year long. When the summer comes around, you want to take extra care to look after your hair. Whether you’re spending the summer at the beach or relaxing in on a patio, your need to take a few extra steps to protect your hair. Humidity and UV rays can wreak havoc on your hair. Your hair goes through a lot during the summer – from days in the sea to lounging in the sun. We’re sharing our top tips and tricks on how to look after your hair this summer.
Why is summer different for my hair?
The reason you need to take extra care in the summer is due to UV rays and humidity. This combination can lead to dry hair, especially if your hair is chemically treated. If your hair is damaged, this can be intensified under the summer sun. Most of the activities we do during the summer – like swimming or visiting the beach – take their toll on our hair. Chlorine is not your hair’s friend.
When you’re jumping from the pool to the bar, you want to take a few minutes to show your hair some love.
Don’t forget your hat!
We all know the importance of wearing SPF, but hats are overlooked. Thankfully, hats are back in vogue. Pick up a bucket hat or a baseball cap to keep your scalp protected from the sun. If you don’t have a hat, you can use a scarf or oversized hairband. Nothing screams summer more than a straw hat – not only is it stylish, it’ll keep your hair from becoming dehydrated.
Choose a nourishing shampoo and conditioner
How often do you stop and read the ingredients list on your shampoo and conditioner? As humidity quickly dehydrates your hair, you want to make sure you’re using shampoo and conditioning with a moisturizing formula. You can add in hair oil for added protection and to stave off any unwanted frizz.
Indulge in a hair mask
You should be incorporating a weekly hair mask into your hair care routine. It acts as a booster alongside your usual hair conditioner to keep your hair healthy and hydrated. You want to take extra care to make sure you’re using your hair masks throughout the summer and for the first few weeks of fall.
After using your hair mask, you want to go in with your shampoo and conditioner to finish your routine. If your hair is in a stronger condition, you might stretch your hair mask routine out to every two weeks.
